Solid vs. engineered
Material is where the price swings the most. Solid hardwood is one piece of wood all the way through and can be sanded and refinished many times. Engineered hardwood has a real wood top layer over a plywood core, which makes it more stable when humidity changes. That matters in New England, and it matters in basements. What pushes a quote up

- Removing the old floor. Carpet comes up fast. Old tile or glued-down flooring doesn't.
- Patterns. Herringbone and diagonal layouts take more time and waste more material.

Is hardwood worth it over LVP?
It depends on the room and your household. Hardwood feels great and can be refinished, but it doesn't like standing water. LVP is waterproof and tougher on scratches but can't be refinished.
