Is It Cheaper to Buy Your Own Flooring and Just Pay for Install?
Sometimes. Here is when buying your own flooring saves money, when it backfires, and what to check before the installer shows up.
Sometimes it's cheaper, especially if you catch a sale. But it can backfire. Here's how to do it right.
When it saves money
- You find a real closeout or sale on a quality product
- You're comfortable choosing the product and underlayment yourself
- You can pick it up and store it indoors for a few days
Where it goes wrong
- Short on boxes. Discontinued lots can't be re-ordered in the same dye lot. Buy about 10 percent extra.
- Wrong underlayment or trim. Some LVP has pad attached and shouldn't get a second pad. Transitions have to match the product.
- Acclimation. Many manufacturers want the boxes inside the house for a set time before install. Check the instructions.
- Warranty. If the product fails, that's between you and the seller. The installer covers workmanship.
What we do with customer-supplied flooring
We check the product name, square footage and box condition at the walkthrough, tell you if you're short, and note the manufacturer's install requirements in your quote. Then we install it like we supplied it.
