For most kitchens, rigid-core LVP is the best balance of water resistance, comfort, durability and cost. Porcelain tile is the toughest and most water-resistant, but it's hard on your feet and unforgiving of dropped glasses. Hardwood can work with care. Laminate is the riskiest because its core doesn't like water.

Why LVP is our usual pick
It shrugs off spills, it's easier on your back and knees than tile, and a good wear layer handles chairs and pets. It also goes in faster than tile, so your kitchen is out of commission for less time. Just remember that a waterproof plank doesn't make the subfloor waterproof. A slow dishwasher leak can still do damage underneath, so fix leaks fast.
When tile is worth it
If you want the most durable surface possible, have a busy house, or love the look of stone, porcelain tile is a great kitchen floor. It lasts for decades. Plan for grout sealing and a couple of good mats where you stand at the sink and stove.
Cabinets and appliances
If you're keeping your cabinets, the new floor goes up to them, not under them. Watch for these:
- Dishwasher height. A thicker floor can trap the dishwasher under the counter. It needs to be planned for.
- Fridge and range. They come out so the floor can go under and behind them.
- Islands. Floating floors shouldn't be pinned under a fixed island. See floating vs. glue-down LVP.
